“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-5
“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14
Teaching our children about love, how to love others and even more importantly how much they are loved by God can feel overwhelming at times. Our children are always watching, listening and taking in information. Children learn to speak, walk, write, respond, and eventually read through observation. They can learn about love in much the same way. We can teach them how to love well by providing them with positive examples through the ways we show love to those around us. As we have opportunities to interact with our family, friends, acquaintances and complete strangers throughout our day, let us ask ourselves the question, “Am I loving this person well?”. Choosing to be patient and kind toward the person making our coffee or food, when the restaurant is super busy, even when we are in a hurry. Verbalizing how grateful we are for what we have and recognizing it is God who is providing for us. Honoring a coworker for their faithfulness and hard work, rather than criticizing them when they make a mistake. Not becoming easily angered when our child or other family member does something that frustrates us. These are all examples of ways we provide positive examples of love. Of course, the ultimate example of love was God giving His one and only Son to die on the cross for our sins in our place, when we didn’t deserve it. Teaching our children about this love, and how Jesus is the greatest source of love is the most valuable lesson they will ever learn.
