“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Wow! When you stop and think about the truth of this verse from the book of Romans, it is mind-blowing! The one true God, Creator of the whole universe and everything in it, loves us SO much that He allowed Jesus Christ, His only son to die in our place—becoming the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. He didn’t die for us when we got our act together, when we were doing everything right, when we were clean and perfect. No, he died for us “While we were still sinners”. If you have ever read through the book of Leviticus, you know how many different sacrifices the people of the Old Testament were required to do to atone for their sins, to keep themselves clean and to maintain a right relationship with God. But the Good News is that when Jesus died on the cross and rose again, no more sacrifices were needed. This is the true story and true gift of Easter. Salvation is a free gift, there is nothing we can do to earn it, it has already been done. All we have to do is believe. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9. As we approach Easter, let us set aside the bunnies, eggs, candy and baskets and embrace the cross, resurrection and free gift of salvation. Jesus is ALIVE! Happy Easter!
